Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Arabic: ; Mu’ammad bin Rshid l Maktum; born July 15, 1949) is currently serving as the vice president, prime minister, and minister of defense of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), in addition to being the ruler of Dubai.

  1. His full name is Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
  2. His father, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, was a former vice president of the UAE and the ruler of Dubai.
  3. He is the third son of Sheikh Rashid.
  4. Following Maktoum’s passing in 2006, Mohammed took over as vice president and ruler of Dubai, which he had previously held.

Mohammed is characterized as “one of the world’s most notable real estate developers” and is a billionaire. The majority of Mohammed’s wealth comes from real estate, and he is known as a real estate mogul. The state is currently managing the land that he owns as an asset to the state.

  • There is a lot of overlap between the assets held by the government of Dubai and those held by the Al Maktoum family, who is the governing dynasty in Dubai.
  • He managed the development of Dubai into a worldwide metropolis and the introduction of a number of government-owned businesses, such as Emirates Airline, DP World, and the Jumeirah Group.

He also oversaw the expansion of Dubai into a global city. Dubai Holding is the owner of several of these properties. Mohammed has been in charge of the construction of a number of projects in Dubai, some of which include the building of a technology park, a free economic zone, Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City, the Dubai International Finance Centre, the Palm Islands, and the Burj Al Arab hotel.

  • Additionally, he was the driving force behind the development of the Burj Khalifa, which is now the highest structure in the world.
  • The president of the UAE appoints Mohammed to the office of Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates.
  • In this role, Mohammed is the undisputed ruler of Dubai.
  • Because there are no democratic institutions and the expression of internal criticism is not permitted, the government is authoritarian.

Scholars agree that it has an authoritarian form of government. On March 5, 2020, a British court came to the conclusion that Mohammed had, on the basis of the preponderance of the evidence, kidnapped two of his daughters, Shamsa and Latifa, and threatened to kill his ex-wife, the Jordanian princess Haya bint Hussein.

  • This decision was handed down.
  • Both Shamsa and Latifa have allegedly been subjected to coercive medical treatment while being imprisoned in Dubai on Sheikh Mohammed’s instructions from the year 2000 and 2018, respectively.
  • Sheikha Latifa produced a number of video messages while she was being held under enforced custody in Dubai on the instructions of Sheikh Mohammed.

These messages were included in a documentary that aired on the BBC program Panorama on February 16, 2021. In 2022, the High Court of England and Wales came to the conclusion that Mohammed “had inflicted ‘domestic abuse’ on an exceptional magnitude against his ex-wife.” [T]he court cited the severity of Mohammed’s actions as the basis for its conclusion.
